Geomancy
Nigel Pennick began his geomantic research in the mid-1960s and in 1975 founded The Institute of Geomantic Research. In its objective of expanding understanding of geomancy, later called Earth Mysteries by some, the IGR published a wide range of journals and booklets, and one book, on various aspects of geomancy, mainly in the European Tradition and some reprints of early 20th century works on Feng-Shui. The IGR rescued the forgotten manuscripts of Ludovic MacLellan Mann and published them, also translated the works of neglected German geomantic writers of the 1930s and 40s. IGR members came together for six conferences in Cambridge and made field trips to places of geomantic interest. During this period, in 1979, Pennick's influential book, The Ancient Science of Geomancy, was published by Thames & Hudson, ISBN 0-500-05032-5. The organization was wound up in 1983. Nigel Pennick's booklet Geomancy, published by Cokaygne Press in Cambridge in 1973, was pirated as a German translation. Subsequently the legal translation of The Ancient Science of Geomancy appeared in German and since then the author has had many of his works in that language including Einst war uns die Erde heilig, published by Felicitas-Huebner Verlag in 1985, which to this day has never appeared in English. There are many more of Pennick's books that deal with geomantic aspects, e.g. Earth Harmony, Beginnings, Celtic Sacred Landscapes.
