KEEPING UP THE DAY

There is a saying in eastern England "it is necessary to keep up the day". Nigel Pennick has been part of the tradition for many years, participating in the rites and ceremonies of the traditional calendar of Old England. With the Northstow Mummers he performs mummers' plays and conducts wassails, hallowings and public performances to mark the significant days of the calendar. In 2009 he and the Northstow Mummers brought back the custom of carring the May Garland through the streets of Cambridge (after a gap of 50 years).
